Department of Central and Eastern Europe

Research areas

The principal objective of research carried out in the Department is to illuminate the processes of change in the former post-Soviet space and the Central European former satellite countries that have regained independence after 1989. Our researchers focus on history of Central and Eastern Europe, with particular emphasis on the recent history of Poland (Wojciech Roszkowski), Polish foreign policy after 2004 (Agnieszka Orzelska Stączek), Czech Republic and Slovakia (Paweł Ukielski), historical policy of the Russian Federation (Wojciech Materski), collapse of the Soviet Union and Russian imperialism in the geopolitical context (Konrad Świder), Polish foreign policy 1989-1993 and Ukrainian ‘revolutions’ after 1991 (Paweł Kowal), and civil resistance (Paulina Codogni). Our research relies on typical methods of contemporary history and political science, including archive queries.
